“The Oral Legacies – Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong” Exhibition
The first Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong, which was announced in 2017, comprises 20 items of significant cultural value, which are in urgent need of preservation, such as Cantonese opera, Nanyin (Southern Tunes), herbal tea, bamboo theatre building technique, the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival, the Tai Hang fire dragon dance for the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the spring and autumn ancestral worship of clans. The list provides the government with a basis for prioritising resources and safeguarding measures for our intangible cultural heritage. This exhibition introduces the 20 items on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong from the perspectives of daily life and customs, performing arts, festive events, folk beliefs and ancestral worship of clans. Visitors can also learn more about the Hong Kong-style milk tea-making technique and the sewing techniques for Hong Kong-style cheongsams and kwan kwa wedding costumes through the distinctive settings in the exhibition gallery.
